The Books

The BooksLocated in the heart of the Kensington Village shopping and entertainment district, Pages is Calgary's literary meeting place. We offer over 10,000 titles in stock at any given time and, through our special order service, we can access most North American titles in print. Our booksellers are all avid readers - they can help you track down that volume you need, suggest a book for your child's birthday present, suggest titles for your book club, or simply get you a great book to read on a quiet Sunday afternoon.

Our reading series goes year-round, offering the latest Calgary writers, as well as those from across Canada and around the world. Check out our upcoming events calendar to keep on top of what's happening "upstairs at the bookstore".

Over the years we have hosted some of the best writers and most interesting people around including David Suzuki, Louis de Bernieres, Timothy Findley, Rohinton Mistry, LGEN. Romeo Dallaire, Vikram Seth, Carol Shields, Pierre Berton, M.G. Vissanji, Terry O'Reilly, Linden MacIntyre, Thomas Pynchon, Yann Martel, Stuart McLean, Annabel Lyon, and many others.

The Building

Pages on Kensington is located in a sixty-year-old building in the heart of Calgary's vibrant Kensington Village. It's a great part of the city to wander around. You'll find all of the coffee shops you could ever hope for, a terrific toy store, wonderful clothing boutiques, art and craft galleries, gift stores galore, as well as tons of restaurants and pubs. Spend the afternoon, but reserve some time to browse around Pages - we have your reading covered!

The facade of the Pages building was redone in 1993, but the interior still has the same creaky wooden floors as when it was the first branch library of the Calgary Public Library in 1947. This building has literary bones!

Our Service

At Pages all of our staff take pride in our exceptional service. What can we help you with?

  • Friendly, knowledgeable booksellers will track down whatever books you would like to have.

  • Our special order service allows you to rest while we do the sleuthing to find the titles you need.

  • We will ship anywhere. Need that book mailed to California for your granddaughter's birthday? Let us know (with as much time as you can), and we'll ship it. Shipping costs will vary from item to item.

  • Need suggestions for your next few book club meetings? Our booksellers can help.

  • Frequent buyers get credits!  Every time you make a purchase, we will ring it in under your name and the computer will calculate your credit points. Once you reach a credit of $10, you can cash it in. You can use the credit when you get it or bank it until you have enough to get that special present for yourself!

Cathy McKay (1957-2003Cathy McKay)

In remembrance of past Pages' owner, Catherine Anne McKay.

Cath was born in Collingwood, ON on October 8, 1957 and graduated from OSCVI in Owen Sound, ON in 1976. She attended and graduated from Huron College at the University of Western Ontario in 1981. She came to Calgary in 1981 and worked at the Public Library before returning to St. Catharines, ON in 1984 to run the book department at Beattie's Stationers. Cathy returned to Alberta in 1989 as a publisher's representative for Thomas Allen & Son Ltd. In 1991 she joined McClelland & Stewart Publishers and in 1996 became their western regional sales manager. Fulfilling her dream to own her own bookstore, she purchased Pages in July 2000. She served on the CBA board of directors for the last two years, was involved with the Banff Publishers Workshop, a member of the independent Book Alliance of Canada and was instrumental in forming the Southern Alberta Independent Booksellers' Association. She was honored to be nominated three years in a row as Canadian Bookseller of the Year.

She leaves behind her best friend and husband Greg Gerrard; her stepchildren, Anna and Oliver Gerrard; her mother Catherine (Trink) McKay; her sisters, Janet McKay, Margaret McKay (Darrell Small); and her brother Neil McKay (Doreen); two cats, Brat and Tiger, and thousands of friends.

Cathy will be greatly missed.
